Sustainable material cycles

Germany generates about 90 million tonnes of organic waste by dry weight each year. Two thirds of that comes from agriculture/forestry. Manufacturing and household waste accounts for the rest. Organic waste is used for a wide variety of purposes, depending on its composition and how contaminated it is. Examples include composting, animal feed, heat generation, biogas production and combustion in waste to energy plants.

Recycling sludge is one of the many areas we are involved in. Sewage sludge is a by-product of the sewage treatment process and is an extremely versatile resource. What makes sewage sludge so interesting is that it contains phosphorous in addition to other nutrients and organic substances. When dried, sewage sludge has a heating value roughly equivalent to brown coal.
